Kenya Story – Peter N. – Education

Growing up I did not enjoy the luxuries my friends had at their disposal. But by association I did not grow feeling disadvantaged because even those I had around me never made me feel so. We shared what we could. Every material thing. Unfortunately, there was one thing we couldn’t share. Quality of education.

I attended a government primary school – Mboru primary school – for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and proceeded to a government secondary school for my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.

There were private schools offering better quality education but I was not privileged to attend them. Most of my friends while growing up attended these kinds of schools but I never felt any lesser human while associating with them. Yeah, I admired what was at their disposal but out of reach for me yet I was contended with what I had.

The Kenya National Library Service local library equalized us all. This is where we could spend our Saturdays and holidays. Here I could interact with children from various schools where I could a thing or two which would prove useful to my development.

After school I went to college for my CPA. Professionally I am a Certified Public Accountant.

Here I paid a visit to the library’s Junior section to try and relive the moments I used to experience there. This is where it all began. The reading culture and obsession with books. To date I still hold membership cards for the Kenya National Library Services Mwingi Community Library and the Sharif Nasir KNLS library in Mombasa.

I still borrow books both for my own use and my son’s use. I plan to register them as members as soon as possible and instill the reading culture in the too. Reading will help a lot with their writing too. As it is said a writer is a reader. You cant develop into a fluent writer is you barely read anything.
